Chocolate Oatmeal Drop Cookies: Two Favorites in One

Chocolate Oatmeal Drop Cookies are a combination of two popular cookie recipes, a favorite cookie flavor (chocolate chip cookies) with a favorite cookie texture (oatmeal cookies.)

So … are they an oatmeal cookie recipe with chocolate chips? Or a chocolate chip cookie with oatmeal?

Yes, both!

... but this recipe leans towards the oatmeal cookie category because the dough is so thick, like oatmeal cookie dough. That’s one reason the recipe calls for baking them at a lower temperature. A slower oven means the cookies have the chance to bake evenly.

Bottom line: this an easy cookie recipe that takes just 10 minutes to mix together and get into the oven. Everybody loves them because they are two favorites in one. Plus the cookies freeze well and are perfect for lunch boxes (if you can hide them long enough to pack them in lunches.)

Chocolate Oatmeal Drop Cookies from The Cookie Elf

Prep time: 10 minutes

Bake time: 11-12 minutes

Makes about 2 ½ - 3 dozen cookies

Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened

1 cup packed brown sugar

½ cup granulated sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

3 cups quick cooking oats

2 cups (12-ounce bag) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions for Chocolate Oatmeal Drop Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 325ºF. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set baking sheets aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, with an electric mixer on medium speed, cream together butter and sugars until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually stir flour mixture into creamed mixture until well blended.
  4. Mix in oats a little at a time until well incorporated into the dough.
  5. Add chocolate chips, combining them into the thick dough with a large spoon.
  6. Scoop cookie dough into walnut-sized balls. Place on baking sheets 2 inches apart. Use a fork, the back of a spoon, or the heel of your hand to lightly flatten each cookie.
  7. Bake for 11-12 minutes until cookies are lightly brown on the edges. Remove cookie sheets from the oven.
  8. Allow cookies to sit for 5 minutes before using a spatula to transfer them to a wire rack. Cool completely.
  9. Store cookies in an airtight container.

Special Baking Tips for Chocolate Oatmeal Drop Cookies

  • You can substitute your favorite flavor chocolate chips (such as milk chocolate chips or butterscotch chips) for semi-sweet.

  • This recipe calls for lower oven temperature than for most drop cookies, which gives the cookie dough more chance to spread out and bake evenly.
